Definition

A design system is the source of truth for how a product looks and feels. It includes design tokens (colors, type, spacing), components (buttons, inputs, cards), patterns (forms, navigation), and documentation. Mature design systems live in code as a component library used by both designers and engineers.

Example

IBM's Carbon, Shopify's Polaris, and Atlassian's Atlaskit are public examples of mature design systems.
