Ueno was founded in 2014 by Halli Thorleifsson, Birna Geirfinnsdóttir, and others. The studio worked on major projects for Apple, Google, Lonely Planet, and many others before being acquired by Twitter in 2021 (and later partially closed when Elon Musk took over). The brand and approach have been influential. By 2026, the original team has moved to other projects, but Ueno's playbook remains a reference.
