Definition

Foundation models are general-purpose models — usually frontier LLMs — that can be specialized via prompting, fine-tuning, or RAG to many applications. The economics of AI today flow through foundation models: a few labs train them, thousands of teams adapt them.

Example

Claude, GPT-4, Llama 3, and Gemini are foundation models. Specialized variants are built on top.
