What is
Jobs To Be Done (JTBD)?

A framework focusing on the underlying job a customer is trying to get done, rather than demographics.

Definition

JTBD reframes customer research from "who are they?" to "what are they trying to accomplish?" The core idea: people don't buy products, they "hire" them to do a job. Understanding the job — and the alternatives being "fired" for it — produces better positioning, product, and marketing decisions.

Example

McDonald's milkshakes were "hired" by morning commuters to make the drive less boring — not as a beverage choice. Reframing the job led to a different product strategy.
