Why this version
Frames the brief from a discovery perspective — user research, hypotheses, success metrics.
We use a version of this for every Vedwix engagement. It's a one-pager because longer briefs go unread.
How PM leads use this template.
For PM leads, the product brief frames the work from a discovery perspective: what user problem are we solving, what hypotheses are we testing, what success metrics will we measure. PM-led briefs are usually the longest because they include user research, hypotheses, and success metrics. The discipline is keeping it under 2 pages — anything longer doesn't get read.
PM leads-specific gotchas
- User research findings belong in the brief
- Hypotheses must be falsifiable
- Success metrics need quantitative targets
- Out-of-scope section is critical
- Two pages max — no exceptions
A PM writes a 1.5-page brief with 3 hypotheses and 2 success metrics. Engineering and design align in 30 minutes; the team ships the experiment in 2 weeks.
Common PM leads questions
What if we don't have user research?
Do some before writing the brief. 5 customer calls beats 50 internal opinions.
How do we handle scope creep?
The "out of scope" section is your shield. Update it explicitly when scope changes.
